Beth in Battle Mode

This year's Technical Know-How, the first long player from the Torontan (Torontish?) trio Beth in Battle Mode, didn't hit me at first. But that's always my favorite stuff in the end. I think the delay came from the unassuming nature of the record. It's 10 songs. It's 30 minutes (barely an LP these days). It's not a record you have to try to figure out. It just goes. Short, driven songs constructed with power chords, keyboards on the low-end (mostly), and a sweet drummer that punctuates all the good and hangs back when he should. This is music that you don't choose to like, it's the stuff you can't help but grin at, and bounce your foot to, and hum while you're peeing.
So here's two songs from the new record. The first can be downloaded from their myspace. The second has the best first line ever and is my current champagne jam.
"No Feeling" by Beth in Battle Mode from Technical Know-How (buy)
"Pesto's at 8" by Beth in Battle Mode from Technical Know-How (buy)

I would have to agree that any band that names a song after a Kids In The Hall reference (no surprise as they are from Canada), but to then start off the song with a sweet David Foley line from the same skit (pure balls.)
Awesome. I had no idea.
Here's a transcipt of the episode.
do a find on "pesto's" or its about 3/4 of the way down.
Tight.
Heh, you guys are sharp--very few people ever pick those references up! :)
